Gurdeep Singh CMD, NTPC SECIAL FEATURE: NTPC Energizing India’s growth Innovation and agility are driving NTPC’s renewable energy initiatives NTPC is not just India’s largest power producer; it is one of the key pillars sustaining India’s economic growth and development. With a share of 17% of the installed capacity, NTPC currently contributes 24% of the total electricity produced in India. NTPC’s goal has always been to deliver power that is economical, efficient, and ecologically sustainable. To meet this objective, it offers a diversified energy mix comprising gas, wind, solar, hydro, floating solar and coal. By 2032, NTPC is targeting non-fossil fuel-based capacity to make up nearly 50 per cent of the company’s portfolio, which includes renewable energy capacity of 60 GW and total portfolio of 130GW. In terms of scale, Mouda | 38 | efficiency, and energy generation from cleaner and greener sources, the company leads the India’s energy transition. It has teamed with NITI Aayog for the Net Energy Zero effort. The public sector giant commissioned more than 1 GW of new renewable capacity in FY 23, taking the total renewable commissioned capacity to the over 3 GWmark. NTPC has commissioned India’s largest floating solar plant at Ramagundam in Telangana. With this, it has achieved the commissioning of 222 MW of floating solar projects and another 40 MW is under construction. These indicate good progress on the renewables side along with the conventional business. To strengthen its main business, the company has ventured outside of its primary industry to engage in consultancy, power trading, power professional training, rural electrification, coal mining, e-mobility, and green hydrogen. NTPC is today recognised as one of the finest employers and workplaces in the country. It is expanding into new areas like Green Hydrogen, Waste to Energy, energy Storage and Nuclear Energy. It is also the first energy company to declare its energy compact goals as part of the UN High-level Dialogue on Energy (HLDE). With an aim at 10% carbon reduction intensity by 2032, NTPC is collaborating for enhancing solar footprint globally. Its concerted efforts toward energy efficiency improvement and energy diversification have led to a reduction in the specific greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2% in FY 22 vis-à-vis FY12. NTPC has committed to championing the circular economy through multiple avenues of ash utilization and Waste-to-Wealth projects. Its ash utilization has almost doubled from 41% in FY 16 to 81.67 % in FY 22. India is marching ahead as one of the world’s fastest-growing economies.
