Jagan Mohan Reddy Hon’ble Chief Minister, Government Of Andhra Pradesh Re-shaping the Renewable Energy Sector Climate Change knows no boundaries; As nations – developing and developed – trace the path of economic recovery, the global energy landscape and markets are being radically reshaped. Institutions and Governments are rapidly raising their commitments to build net-zero, decarbonized, environmentally conscious and socially responsible value chains. To decarbonize the industrial value chains and combat climate change, the Government of Andhra Pradesh has formulated a comprehensive action plan for reducing emissions, particularly in power generation, transport, manufacturing, and agriculture sectors. As the global energy transition architectures are changing, the state is working aggressively towards Energy Storage and Green Hydrogen Projects; stewarding solutions towards net zero by adopting sustainable governance practices with a people and investor-inclusive approach. With an objective to attain climate neutrality, Andhra Pradesh is moving steadily towards achieving sustainable consumption and production patterns through initiatives such as Zero-Budget Natural Farming (ZBNF), Solar Pump Set Program for farming, practicing 365 DGC (Days Green Cover) model by the farmers, setting up of projects that not only provide water for irrigation but also for industrial development such as hydro power. A testimony to the state government’s climate commitments is the world’s largest Integrated Renewable Energy Storage Project (IRESP), established with capacity of 5,230 MW, which is scheduled to be commissioned by the end of 2023. AP is now leading by example, with the energy efficiency measures being implemented for energy conservation, by positioning itself in ‘Achiever’ category in the State Energy Efficiency Index (SEEI)-2020, announced by Union Ministry of Power’s Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). The State government has also come up with ‘Andhra Pradesh Renewable Export Policy -2020’ with an aim to establish 120 GW capacity renewable power projects by 2025. Out of the IH2A (Indian Hydrogen Alliance) proposed 5 green hydrogen hubs to be developed in India by 2025, with a capacity of 150 GW of electrolyzer capacity; two are proposed at Visakhapatnam (30 MW) and Krishnapatnam (30 MW) in Andhra Pradesh. Road ahead for Andhra Pradesh: Having the second largest coastal line in the country with 974 km of length, with six operational ports and three ports under development, the State government is actively working on port led industrial development. With abundance in green industry base materials which form the base for the New Global Energy Architecture, the growth of PSH projects, the Demand-side and Supply-side advantages for Green Hydrogen in the state, AP is set to become the Green Hydrogen Hub and energy storage capital of India. •
